Current Project: Chasing Rainbows
Status: On my "to do" list while promo continues for my February 27 release, STARS IN YOUR EYES
Some people's favorite holiday is Christmas. Others love Valentine's Day. However, I'm intrigued by the more off-beat holidays, including Ground Hog Day, which is celebrated on Feb. 2.
An "official" ground hog site on the Internet claims Ground Hog Day grew out of a mainly German superstition that if a hibernating animal casts a shadow Feb. 2 -- the Christian holiday of Candlemas -- that winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says spring will be early.
What do ground hogs have to do with writing, you might ask? Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania has been celebrating this holiday since 1886 and claims perhaps the most famous ground hog, Punxsutawney Phil. You can visit his Web site at *http://www.groundhog.org/info* to enjoy some creative writing "facts," such as...
--Yes! Punxsutawney Phil is the only true weather forecasting ground hog. The others are just impostors.
-- How many "Phils" have there been over the years? There has only been one Punxsutawney Phil. He has been making predictions for over 120 years! Punxsutawney Phil gets his longevity from drinking the "elixir of life," a secret recipe. Phil takes one sip every summer at the Ground hog Picnic and it magically gives him seven more years of life.
Now, if you lean more toward nonfiction, you might want to consider these fascinating facts:
-- Ground hogs are the largest members of the squirrel family. Though they are usually seen on the ground, they can climb trees and are also capable swimmers.
-- Ground hogs are excellent burrowers, using burrows for sleeping, rearing young, and hibernating. The average ground hog has been estimated to move approximately 1 m³ (35 cubic feet), or 320 kg (700 pounds), of dirt when digging a burrow.
-- Ground hogs are also known as wood chucks. Though they don't chuck wood, perhaps you've heard the tongue twister, "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"
-- When alarmed, ground hogs use a high-pitched whistle to warn the rest of the colony.
-- Though they are celebrated as being able to predict the onset of spring, ground hogs are considered pests in many agricultural areas.
If you are would like to celebrate Ground Hog Day with your kids or grandkids, try this Web site of kindergarten age activities: *http://www.geocities.com/athens/aegean/2221/groundhog.html*.
How about you? Do you like the more traditional holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas? Or do you enjoy something different? If so, why? Have you ever written a story about an off-beat holiday?

LOL Genene! In our neck of the woods we call them rock chucks and one rock chuck in a summer can consume or store as much grass as three cows.(yes, my son-in-law and the dogs see how many they can get rid of) Our rock chucks give a high pierced chirp to sound the alarm. I'll have you know about a week ago when it was sunny and I was walking they were out and about. Don't know if that means more winter since it wasn't Feb. 2nd.
As a kid my favorite holiday was Halloween because I could dress up. As an adult my favorite holidays are the ones where my dh doesn't have to go to work.
Cute post
Okay- this has just tickled me. The other day when I posted a blog about being overweight and needing to exercise the blogger word then I posted a response on someone elses blog was "ipigy" which to me was I'm piggy.
I responded on someone's blog that had hot photos and the word to type was "ihoty" Which to me is "I hottie"
And today when I responded to Genene's blog, it was "irati" "I ratty" which is a rodent. Is it just me or is the blog getting catty????
Paty -- LOL. Are you talking about the identity word? Why are having to type one in? I don't get it.
Meanwhile, Genene, that's a fun idea, to look on the Internet while you are writing a book and see if there's some holiday, maybe a relatively unknown one, and make a character respond to it (Ground Hog Day Parade?) My favorite Ground Hog story is the movie which I absolutely adored.
Fin blog -- I hope someone asks me about ground hogs today! Prepare to be dazzled.
Alice,
I think because I hadn't logged in yet, they asked me for the identity word or whatever it's called because it wasn't there when I wrote the second response. And it isn't here on this one.
LOL, Paty! I found it ironic that ground hogs have become a money-making tourist attraction in some parts of the country and are on the Top 10 List of Pests to Get Rid Of in other places.
I liked Halloween as a kid too. Not so much for the dress-up part, but because the last stop for trick-or-treating was a neighbor who made homemade popcorn balls to go along with the Hershey's chocolate bars she had for us. They were devoured as soon as we got home!
By the way, Paty, I think the blog is being catty--or getting too smart for our own good. I've never been sure how they come up with the "words" used for word verification, but maybe the magic computer does search the blog entry for something it can use. I've never noticed that it matches my entries, though. You must be magic!
Hey, Alice! People will either be dazzled with your knowledge of ground hogs or they will run from the room!
I really liked the Ground Hog Day movie too! Stories about obscure holidays could also make good kids' stories or animated movies too. Could do one about a city ground hog who is a celebrity and a country ground hog who has to leave his home to survive. Let's see, who could do the voices in that animated movie...
Although I liked the Ground Hog Day movie, I can't STAND Bill Murray. He totally grosses me out. *shudder* But Andy McDowell is a hottie! LOL
I don't have an opinion on ground hogs or their day. My favorite holiday is Halloween because you get to dress up and be silly and eat lots of candy. Christmas is okay, but expensive and a let down unless you get all spiritual about it and the I guess it's good. LOL Valentine's is probably fun, but DH doesn't really care about holidays much so he's not as romantic as he used to be about Valentine's Day. He takes me out on dates regularly, so maybe that's why Valentine's isn't so special anymore. :)
I've never written about obscure or regular holidays yet. I'm writing about a family reunion right now. That's a crazy thing to write about and can be just as much of a pain as any holiday spent together. LOL
Oh, St. Patrick's Day is a fun one to celebrate, even if I don't drink. We have corned beef and cabbage on that day and I usually have green paper products and stuff for that day. It's fun. I've even made green eggs and green milk for breakfast for my kids before. If I remember right, I had to add chocolate before I could get them to actually drink the green milk. LOL
And Paty, too funny about the identity word things!
