Change

Current Project: Whiskers and Wine
Status: Plotting & Character Development

<--- Check her out! Someone is enjoying summer in all her muddy glory. Kinsey. She cracks me up.

The title of my blog is pretty bland, I know, but very succinct! I subscribe to these fabulous daily affirmations that are all about change. Today's was particularly apt:

Speak the truth in an effort to create the necessary changes.
Honesty is required if you want the help of others.

I'm not asking for help, but I am announcing change. I received my membership renewal notice from RWA the other day and I've decided not to renew. The dues have gone up, which I find odd since folks everywhere are scrambling for their next dime just to survive, and I figured it's time for a change. With all the various groups and forums online, there's no lack of writerly support and friendship, but I admit I'm really going to miss you guys.

Change is a good thing. I'm no stranger to it, and the experiences change brings usually enriches and invigorates.

I'm hoping the next change for me will be my publishing status. Whee! MYSTIC TAXI is now officially out on submission, and on an exclusive with one publisher this week, then to another one next week. I'm excited to see where these exclusive publisher reviews might lead. *rubs hands together vigorously*

I'll be sure to keep in touch with you all outside the chapter, and I hope you'll still invite me to the next beach retreat. You know how much I adore those! Take care and best of luck to you all! :)

Ah, Karen, I'm going to miss you on the blog. I wish you could find a way to work us into your schedule but respect your decision not to.

Change can be invigorating, etc... Every time I ask myself what I get from this group I realize there's only one answer -- writing is more fun since I've been involved with this group than it was before this group and that for me is worth the $$$. I would just remind you since you've been part of "US" you've finished at least two books, signed an agent and found yourself in your current hand rubbing situation.

I understand where you are coming from and I am really sorry to hear that RWA has raised its dues, but damn, I'm going to miss you.

Ah, Karen, I faced the same decision as you with the raise in RWA National dues. However, the benefit from the local chapters I belong to made my decision.

I hope you drop by the blog once in a while and share your news with us. And perhaps post another photo or two of you beautiful fur baby!

By the way, I'm probably going to be scarce on the blog and loop for awhile (but I'll still keep my regular blog days). My mom was in the hospital earlier this week. She's home and doing much better, but I'll be driving the freeway a lot to spend more time with my parents for the next few weeks. Hope you are all being productive with writing!

Karen, Good luck with your changes, we'll miss your blogs and forthright comments, but changes are good most of the time.

Love the picture, Karen.

We'll miss you, and I understand your need for a little change. We'll be right here if you decide to change your mind!

Good luck with MYSTIC TAXI! I know your agent will find it a good home.

Thanks, everyone! I've been a member of RWA for about 8 years and though I got a lot out of the organization at the beginning, I've found many other helpful writing communities since then that can easily take its place. The cost far exceeds RWA's worth, IMO, with $85 for basic membership, $30 for the MWV membership, another $30 for RC, and another $30 for FF&P, you can see how I was drowning in dues. But as it's been said, the friendships I've made in MWV are priceless. And we'll still keep in touch. I think if I actually lived closer and I could attend meetings, it might have made a difference in my decision to quit.

I'll still comment on the blog, and visit the MWV website, so I'll be "around." :)

Karen -- love the picture! Kinsey looks like she's having great fun.

Change is inevitable; the alternative is stagnation. I'll miss your blog posts, but I, too, hope you'll visit us here and comment and let us know how you're doing. Good luck with your submissions!

Hey Karen, you don't have to leave the blog just because you're not going to renew with RWA. You can still come to the blog and comment all the time, that's free. :)

I totally understand/agree about all the dues. It's too much. When my membership is up this year I'm not renewing either.

As much as I love all of you girls, I can't afford to renew anymore. Especially since I don't write. There are too many other things that I'm involved with that occupy my little mind. LOL

Good luck with everything, Karen!

Karen -- I've been hating my response since I wrote it. I read this weekend that Darwin said -- more or less, mind you -- that in the end, it won't be the smartest who survives or the strongest, but the one who is able to best adjust to change.

Looks like I'm going to be one of the first to go as I don't fall into any one of those three categories!
