SATURDAY CHECK-IN

Current Project: A BABY BETWEEN US
Status: almost done

I'm in the hospital this a.m. with my mother who came down with pneumonia. When they called me at 5:45, I was already awake thanks to -- yep, the puppy. And, btw, the photo above is of Fort Bragg taken a few years ago and has nothing to do with anything. I just like it.

I've finished the book to the point of an epilogue which will be essential for this book. It's already too long, so I need to reread, edit and cut five to ten pages then write the epilogue (and tie up loose ends, get rid of red herrings that never panned out, etc... I'm also a little worried about a character's motivation slipping midway through -- ack!) It's due Monday, obviously it won't make it by then, but hopefully it will be ready to go. I'm not sure how I'm going to do this from the hospital as the laptop is refusing to open the book file I emailed myself before I left, but fingers are crossed.

Things do work out for a reason. If I hadn't sold this book, I would have gone to the conference and I wouldn't be here now and that would be hard on my mom, so there you go.

Hope each of you had a productive week. Can't wait to hear if Wavy accomplished what she wanted to accomplish.

I got the name of my own book wrong. How embarrassing is that? It's A Baby Between THEM.

ROFLMAO!!! Oh Alice, you're too funny!! Us. Them. There's a baby between SOMEBODY!! LOLOLOL

Ugh, your poor mom. I'm sorry she's got pneumonia. That sucks. I hope she's well soon and gets out of that hospital fast. It's no fun to be sick and stuck in a dreary hospital when it's so beautiful outside. She needs fresh air and sunshine like that little girl in the story, Heidi :)

That's a nice picture. I don't know where Fort Bragg is, but it's a great pic. :) Makes me want to go sailing.

Good luck on your editing. I know you'll get it all spiffy and turned in on time; or at least close to time. :)

I had a productive week. I read the latest Galen Foley novel, cleaned my bedroom and my bathroom, and got all caught up on the laundry from when I was gone for a week. Oh, and I daydreamed about the beach house story I'm working on. I plan to sit down next week and write it all down. It's nice to be able to just write for fun. Waaaay less stress. LOL

I'm sending healthy-healing vibes to your mom!! You stay healthy and happy, too!!

Love the photo Alice! Sorry to hear about your mom. You'll get the book finished on time. You always do!

My week was more or less productive considering I was all over the place! I have the rewrites on the WIP done to the hard part, the ending which is going to be a major make over.

The book signing in Baker City was so/so. I sold six books, traded books for a reference book and met half of a writing team who I have gone to with countless research question for the latest WIP and I met the museum director who I've also badgered for information. She was dream and dug into their back room to come up with a petticoat to use in the photos for my next two book covers. Which I took the photos at the museum in their displays.

The down side to the week. I received my first review this week. And while the reviewer said she loved the hero and heroine and the love story she found the villains cartoonish.??? I have no clue what she meant but when I showed the review to my editor she went ballistic! And my daughter just kept shaking her head after she read the reivew. LOL

Piper wonderful to see you're thinking of writing!

(((HUGS))) to you, Alice. I'm sending prayers and positive energy to your mom and to you. Recently went through the pneumonia thing with my mom and it's not fun.

As others have said, you'll get the book done--you always do!

Hey, Paty, sounds like the booksigning went well. You sold books and made connections--I think that's a success. (((HUGS))) to you also on the review. As I've heard others say, this is where you use selective editing if you decide to use it for promo. Use the blurb that she loved the hero, heroine and romance, and leave it at that. :)

Piper, so glad you've got a story developing in your head. What fun!

I'm in development mode on my next writing project (the nine-book series). Pretty much adding to my notes about potential scenes for the stories until the doggies and I get resettled on some property.

Good luck with the editing, Kendra. I've more or less (I think) finished the sescond in my new series of crime thrillers. I'm now at the stage of going through it trying to make sure it makes sense. It's hard work. Doesn't help that I'm on a tiring promotional tour after the recent launch of the first in the series. It's been going really well, breaking sales records in the stores I've visited, but that in itself is tiring somehow. All the excitement, I guess. Cut Short is my first book.
Thank you for taking a look at the Curzon Group blog. You're a very welcome visitor and I hope you come back and comment again, so we know you're there.

woops - sescond... should be second!
And best wishes to your mum for a speedy recovery.

Paty-- you had quite a week. Honey, we all get the occasional bad review. Take the good, like Genene said, and leave the bad.

Genene -- when do you think you and the dogs are going to be ready to relocate?

Piper -- delighted to hear your little story wheels are turning.

Leigh -- This is lovely to have you comment. Sounds like you've been on a treadmill! I love the name Cut Short, btw. Brilliant!

I'm a little confused about your comment I visited the Curzon Group blog. Maybe you have me confused with Kendra, a fellow member of our group? At any rate, I wouldn't have mentioned it except I don't want you to think Kendra's mom isn't well (I assume Kendra's mom is just fine!) I am going to go check out the Curzon group though and see if I forgot going there! (It could happen...)

And thank all of your for your warm wishes for my mom. I'm off to the hospital now.

Alice, I hope your mom is doing better today. That pneumonia crap can be nasty.

I'm sure you'll do aces on your edits. You already know what the book needs, so you're more than halfway there already.

I had a busy day yesterday as Kinsey and I went to Orvis Dog Days at the Old Mill. Lots and lots of dogs, almost all of them pure breds, hardly any mutts. She was the perfect angel, loved having kids pet her, and whe made lots of new doggie friends. We watched a cool dog acrobatics show, retriever demo, got a free t-shirt and a $25 gift certificate. It was a fun day.

Nothing accomplished with the new book project last week, but I wrote a bunch of articles for Demand Studio and finished a design project.

Karen -- everyone's faith that I can pull this off is lovely. Yesterday was so frustrating. I was at the hospital two times for hours and hours at a time and my mom was sleeping and do you think I could get laptop to open the book? I was supposed to edit yesterday and today but I can't so while I know I will eventually get it done, it was supposed to be done today and it won't be. Very frustrating. I bought a alphasmart, but you can't edit on that. I am ready to take all the machines in my life and throw water on them. HA!

As for your day -- that does sound like fun.

I'm curious what kind of articles you wrote -- as in what subjects???

Karen Duvall said...

Alice, the book will be late, but you have a good excuse.

As for the articles I wrote, they were: Clever Retail Advertising Ideas, Chronic Diarrhea in Dogs, Comparing Advertising Costs, Advice on Credit Card Debt, and Homemade Dog Repellents. I also wrote an article for Helium's Marketplace about couples therapy, but the publisher has to select it out of other submissions. I rarely do those because they're not a guaranteed sale.

Karen- I'm impressed. You're going to be an expert on everything before long!

LOL, Alice! Expert? Hardly. :) But I do learn a lot from the assignments I choose. I wrote about Vitamin B12 deficiencies in dementia patients so I now take B12 religously (as a veg, I don't get nearly enough). In another article I learned Kohlrabi has more Vitamin C than orange juice, and I've learned MSG is not a seasoning but a flavor enhancer that makes our brains only think the food tastes better. Today I'll be writing about remodeling furniture. Ha! :) Can you tell I'm having fun? I'm also making about $150 a week doing it.

Hi, Alice! Hope your mom is doing better.

The doggies and I were ready to move a year ago. However, house and yard projects need to be finished first. Now that I've finished up some other projects and am focusing on the house and yard, my son and I are making major progress--hooray! But I've quit estimating when everything will be ready as that just seems to be frustrating. My lesson seems to be to let everything happen in its own time. Hmm...think I've said that to others a time or two.

Leigh, congratulations on the success of your first book! It's nice to have you stop by.

Karen, sounds like you are having fun and learning a lot. Very cool!

Sorry for the late check-in.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mother, Alice. I hope that you are hanging in there and taking care of yourself.

No progress. Sigh. I did write an essay about motherhood (on my blog) and I'm pretty happy with that, so I guess had just *write* been my goal, I have written :P

New Week. Less Grading. WRITE SYNOPSIS. OPEN FILE. GET CHOCOLATE. LOTS OF CHOCOLATE.
