Saturday Check-in

First- Happy Birthday to me! Yes, I turned half a century today, but I don't feel a day over 30! LOL

I accomplished more writing this week than I did last week, which only had to be a word! LOL I manage 4300 words. Not near what I wanted, but research snafus have hung me up. I'm trying to talk my dh into taking me to the local rodeo tonight for research. That is after we attend, yet another wedding.

Has the rise in temperature stymied your word flow? Or are you a heat wave writer. Holing up next to the air conditioner and typing away? How did the rest of you fare this week for word count, researching, or brewing?

Great job Paty!

I've been writing in spurts all week. I'm doing rewrites and adding a second POV in my WIP. I'm not keeping track of word count, just tapping away chapter by chapter.

I can write in the heat if I have air conditioning. If I'm too cold or too hot I find it hard to concentrate.

Way to go one the word count, Paty.

And Lori, it'll be fun to add another POV. Enjoy.

Last Saturday I reported that the proposal I was working on had been turned down. I thought hard about when they suggested I do a different kind of book. Monday I told my editor the few thoughts I'd had, Friday they offered me a contract for that book and one to follow. The two books will be connected but without a single "umbrella" theme. The good news about this is that they don't need to follow on the heels of one another (release date wise).

I have to admit it's a little staggering to go from the disappointment of not being able to write the books I spent weeks plotting and then sell two books that exist nowhere but in my head. The first one is due Sept. 15th. That's not very far away. I'm a little shell shocked and worried that I can pull this off. And I know I'll feel better when I have a plot and have thus taken firm ownership over the basic idea.

So, hopefully by next Saturday I will have a word count to announce. As Sherlock Homes said, "The game's afoot!"

Lori, you may not be racking up a word count but the changes you are making in your WIP is awesome!

Alice, How fickle is the business where you have worked so hard on a proposal and they reject it for a idea in your head? Good luck with the plotting and writing!

If I don't get cracking on my self imposted deadline, I won't have a full to pitch at Nationals!

Sorry about the typos- trying to type with wet nail polish. Gotta look good while I'm raking hay! LOL Actually the polish is for the wedding later today, but I won't have time with raking to put it on later.

Oh, geez, Paty, what's wrong with me? Happy Birthday!

Great job, Paty!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 50 is nifty :)I hope you have an excellent day with lots of writing and chocolate.

No writing here. Some plotting. Much brewing.

Happy birthday, Paty! And great word count.

Lori, sounds like you are making stead progress. Hooray!

Alice, congratulations on the contract! Definitely interesting on the events leading up to it, but hey! And of course you can pull off a September 15 deadline. You've done it before, right? (Want me to bring you some easel pad paper for plotting or a storyboard or a dart board?)

Wavy, so glad you're feeling better and back to plotting and brewing.

I took a side journey on another project this last week, so didn't make as much progress on my series as I wanted to. However, I'm back on the series now and plan to spend much of the warmer part of the day working on this project. The weather doesn't slow me down much as my house stays comfortable. If it's colder, I add layers. If it's warmer, I take off some layers. Could even take time out to run through the sprinklers!

Hope you all have a productive week!

Wavy, you survived a terrible cold with a baby to care for. That, to me, seems a lot harder than writing a few words!

I'm like Genene except I use heaters and air conditioners to acclimate. Btw, Genene, I went to the Rose City site and saw pictures of your office (lovely) and Eli's, too. Cool.

Happy Birthday, Paty!!! I hope you have a fab day! Sounds like it will be a busy one.

I don't think I checked in last week. Wrote 10K last week while on vaca with the kids. Not bad, though I'd hoped for more like 14, but I'm not complaining. This week has been a bust for me big time - swim meets, kids home, catch-up after vacation...it's all added up to very little word count. I think I got 2K new written (and most of that last night). I did, however, get and send back my line edits for my first release, so I suppose it wasn't a wasted week. I'm hoping to get some serious words written today...we'll see what happens.

And ugh...the heat! I know I shouldn't complain because it's better than 50 degrees and rainy, but I'm a 75-80 degree girl. This past week was perfect for me. Today it was already 85 degrees by 10am! It's gonna be a warm-one. And me...with no a/c...ack!

Alice--Congrats again on the new contracts!!!!!

Way to go, girlie!!!

Thank you, Everyone!

While I was out raking I realized I have to punch out 4000 words a day (weekdays) to get my first draft done by Nationals. Soooo, if you don't see me on the loop or here much the next month, you'll know why!

Wavy, I'm glad you're better and both you and Tavy survived. LOL I loved the blog where you said you played put mommie's books on the bed and take them off.I have a tbr pile in my office and every time Tiffiney comes over she carts those books all over the house. Stacking them here, stacking them there.

Genene, it's okay to take time out and work on something else now and then.

Eli, Great word count last week! Don't worry we all have weeks that don't allow us the writing time we want.

Genene Valleau, writing as Genie Gabriel said...

Oh, Eli! You are a harsh taskmaster for yourself. Ten thousand words is wonderful and 2000 ain't too shabby either. You are doing an awesome job of juggling all those plates overflowing with "stuff"! Hope you take the time to pat yourself on the back once in a while and give yourself a special treat.

Ouch, Paty! What a goal you've set for yourself. Let's see, a piece of chocolate for each word -- or each 100 words -- would add up to a scrumptious mountain of chocolate.

OK, you ladies with steep goals have inspired me! It's time for me to plot!

Happy Birthday, Paty! I hope you didn't get nail polish on your keyboard.

I didn't get as much done as I'd hoped. Elisabeth pointed out some problems in a chap that took me a long time to figure out how to fix. It's stronger and sharper now. Then she distracted me by asking me if I had something formal to wear to the Golden Heart ceremony. Aack. So I spent a lot of writing time shopping online. Then today I spent today's kidless morning at the mall.

What does everyone think? For Golden Heart night? Definitely a full length dress? Fancy formal? What have you seen and what does the majority wear?

chanceofbooks said...

Kendra, if you read the Smart Bitches Blog, go to their archives from last year's conference. They had a TON of pictures from the Awards ceremony. It's not just the Golden Heart--it's the Rita too (I'm pretty sure, unless they are changing the format). Many authors seem to wear "New Year's Eve" clothes--fancy dresses, night club clothes, cocktail wear. I think Eli also has photos on her blog of the last two years.

Alice Sharpe said...

Kendra, last year Eli wore a beautiful long black dress. I would say think formal cocktail party. It can be short, too, like Lisa's frock (when's the last time you used that word?) or elegant pants. Frankly, it could probably be anything, but if you want to dress like most of the people do, think pretty dress.

The worst part of going to Nationals is getting obsessed about what to wear. I have no time to worry about this but I am still worried!

Btw, good going on your book,

Paty Jager said...

Kendra,

It's always frustrating when someone points out something, you realize does need fixed, but aren't sure how to tackle it. Congrats on working through it.

I'm wearing a long, black halter dress with a pink jacket and adding western accessories for the doin's at National. The only thing I purchased for the occasion is a small beaded bag.

Hey Kendra! Good job on reworking the chapter in your story. Sounds like the results were worth the time you spent.

I had a wonderfully productive writing day on Saturday! I now have rough outlines of the character arcs for the hero and heroine as well as plot arcs for eight of the nine books in the series. In the next couple of days, I'll do drafts of how each of these characters grows over the entire series and finish the draft plot of the final book, which ties everything together.

Then this project will be on hold while I make edits to my late February 2009 release and focus on some other projects. Feels so good, I just had to share!

Hope you all are having productive writing time!

Happy (belated) Birthday, Paty!

I would've posted sooner, but we were out of town for a wedding and I'm just now getting caught up!

We were in Lake Tahoe during the worst of the heat here so we missed having to deal with it.
