Or maybe it's supposed to be the Tenth Circle of Hell. I forget. Been a long time since I read Dante.I don't put much store in horoscopes, but I found this writer horoscope on another blog this morning and read it for entertainment value only. The part that got me (I'm Scorpio) was this:
On the 6th, Mars enters fellow water sign Pisces, and begins its month-long transit through your fifth house of creativity. This transit triggers all kinds of activity concerning your creative endeavors. You may be working longer hours to complete a book, gain insights into plot structure and characters, or land a new project. This period will be your strongest time for writing. Your challenge will be to stay focused because there will be plenty of distractions.
Okay, yeah, if you read all the horoscopes, they say about the same thing - different days that are productive and optimum writing times - but guess what today is? Yup. The 6th. And guess where my head is? Oh yeah, so in the WIP it's ridiculous. And all the sudden, too. For the past week, I've been stalled. Last weekend I wrote like a fiend - a scene between my hero and (one of) my villain(s). After I ended this long, emotional, drawn out scene (hero reluctantly meets with the man who was convicted of killing his child) I couldn't go on. I'd written myself into a corner and I didn't know how to get out of it. I've spent this crazy week trying to figure out where I went wrong. And last night - at Gremlin #2's baseball practice, as I was standing in the sun watching, I realized my problem. Motivation. I hadn't clearly defined my villain's motivation for agreeing to this discussion. What does he want? What is he getting out of it? The man's in prison. Why did he agree to this meeting? And then, bam, it hit me. And it makes perfect sense. Of course, to be able to go on, I have to go back and add in a few critical scenes early on (this is why I HAVE to write in order and why I HAVE to go back and fix known errors before I can move forward - because without these critical scenes, nothing else in the book makes sense.) Did I get a chance to last night? No. Life was too busy and chaotic. My plan is (was) to do that today.
So what does all of this have to do with Dante and the Tenth Level of Hell? Oh...you are going to be so sorry you asked (or wondered).
Let me give you a glimpse of the Tenth Level. Gremlin #2 wakes up last night at 12:30 am because he can't sleep. No, he doesn't wake up, he wakes up SCREAMING. The only way to keep him quiet so he doesn't wake up everyone else in the house is to let him sleep in our bed. Correction...he sleeps on MY side of the bed. Practically on top of me. Hence, I do not sleep.
Upon waking, Gremlin #2 then begins to scream about a cut on his chin. Which the band-aid is not healing. And a cut on his lip. Which hurts so bad he's obviously dying a slow and painful death. We're talking major trauma here. My offering to cut his face off to solve the problem only causes more screaming. The DH looks at me and asks where my motherly instincts have gone. Straight faced, I reply, "I'm pretty sure I don't have any."
Gremlin #1 gets dressed for school and when told her shorts are too short (because, after all, it's summer and one sunny day means everyone and their dog has to wear shorts) goes into a screaming fit about school rules and how stupid they are and how on earth would her mother know the rules in the first place? It's a conspiracy to make her life a living hell (welcome to my world, daughter).
Gremlin #3 is the only happy one in the group. Happy for him includes running around with his Batman mask and cape and growling at the top of his lungs. Which, of course, makes Gremlin #1 scream louder, and Gremlin #2 cry even more.
And the whole time this happening, the DH is complaining because he's supposed to be on a conference call in his office, yet the noise level in the house is so high it's causing him to want to break open the Crown Royal at 8AM and drink himself into oblivion. (Wait! That's my line!)
And doesn't it all just figure that the stars and moons have aligned on THIS day to wreak havoc on my life and turn my children into the scariest looking-and-acting Gremlins when all I want to do is sit and work out this problem in the WIP that I have so suddenly discovered a solution for?
*sigh*
Tenth Level of Hell. I tell you.
Sadder still is I forsee no writing this weekend. We're headed to the beach with my extended family. While I'm looking forward to it, all I want to do is write, which I will not be able to do.
A wise woman said to me the other day something along the lines of: Without the chaos of your family you'd have nothing to write for. She is, of course, right. And it burns my ass she's right so often (you know who you are). I love the family dearly and ultimately write for and because of them, I just haven't quite figured out how to juggle it all. It's something I struggle with every day. I don't know how full-time working mothers are able to write. I'm in awe of them.
For those of you who complain about being distracted in your lives -be it from work or chores or the dog that won't leave you alone, remember my Tenth Level of Hell. If you think you're distracted, I will gladly send you my Three Gremlins for a day so you can experience real distraction.

Eli-
Whine, whine, whine.
LOL, your morning brings back memories. Ack.
I am also a Scorpio, so after I read your blog and chuckled, I went back to check out the horoscope part again.
"This transit triggers all kinds of activity concerning your creative endeavors. You may be working longer hours to complete a book, gain insights into plot structure and characters, or land a new project. "
Hello? Can you say spot on?
"This period will be your strongest time for writing. Your challenge will be to stay focused because there will be plenty of distractions."
Like holidays, trips, etc...? Wow! This means I can spend my ten days in Hawaii plotting the telephone psychic books! And they will work. Never-mind the big gapping crevices of logic and plot, they will all come together because my moon is transiting--or something.
I am delighted.
Meanwhile, while all those good ideas of yours are rattling around in your brain with nowhere to go because there is too much chaos, maybe they will continue writing themselves!!! It happens.
Is the anything more frustrating than knowing where you want to go and not having any gas in the car? Uh, wrong metaphor. Not having a gar in the garage? No, wait, I can do this. Not having any headlights? A flat tire? Can't find your way to the EXIT sign of that big parking garage in the sky?
I give up the metaphor stuff. But I have faith that when you finally hit the keyboard, your story will be right there in your fingertips.
Have a great trip, say hi to the ocean for us land- bound writers and let your subconscious work overtime.
Alice
Wow. My offer to kidnap you still stands :) I read my horoscope on that site and it was total crap. I don't think that taking a sip or two of that Crown Royal would be a bad thing...I hope your day gets better!
Eli, what a hoot! Sorry, don't mean to laugh at your pain, but I can't help it. 8^) I remember days like that with my 3 and it was usually them fighting with each other. I'll never forget the day I was standing outside my car that contained all 3 of my kids before taking them to school. I was talking to someone, and she pointed at my car. It was rocking. A fight had broken out and I wasn't in a fired up hurry to break it up. I was mesmerized by this possessed vehicle that could move all by itself.
Hang in there, Eli. I know you'll get the opportunity sometime today to work out your WIP's scene. And I agree with you about having to solve such things before moving forward. I can't imagine doing it any other way. Good luck!
Karen
LOL- Reading your blog brought back memories. And I'm glad they are now memories!
Hang in there- Send gremlin #1 & #2 to their friend's houses after school and put #3 in front of a batman movie. Then write away!
Or better yet, take your computer and once you get to the coast, hand the kids off to someone. Say here, they are yours all weekend and then hide in a closet!
You'll get there. When something is in a writer's head and needs to get out it will. And after thinking about it until you can, it will be even better and easier to write.
Thanks for the entertaining blog! LOL
After I stopped trembling and shaking in fear of what lies ahead, I clicked over the horoscope. And was instantly uplifted! I'm totally off the hook! My creativity comes LATER this month! Awesome.
Thanks for the fun link! It's gorgeous outside. Any chance you could take the gremlins to a park and write on your laptop while they play or . . .er wrestle with each other? I could meet you at the park with my dog if another pair of adult eyes on the fighting and biting might help you meet your astrological destiny today. (It's 3:30 as I post this. Call me if you want to go B4 dinner. My dog will run them ragged for you playing soccer).
I'm amazed that those of you with kids at home can write at all. I'm so glad my son is turning 40 years old next month and he was our only child. Everyone thought he was hyperactive, but at least he was only one, and he calmed down and started directing his energy into fun outlets in his teens. Here's hoping things change for the better for you sooner than that so you can get those ideas down on paper, Eli. I'd take up Wavy's offer, if I was you.
Maybe the moon is in alignment for all of us. I have been experiencing similar enlightenment blocked by life.
Today the revisions were divine. Not the quantity, but the quality, you know? But how many dang interuptions can happen in one morning? The number boggles the mind.
I am desperate to get this novel polished and out the door because the next one is knocking. No, make that pounding, for a turn. I jotted a bunch of notes for the next ms. and still haven't had a chance to keyboard them in to its file. Dang it.
Good luck, Eli.
And a very entertaining, well-written blog!
Hey girlies...
Sorry I didn't get to respond to any of these earlier - I was at da beach. (Or is that do beach, to go with do bomb? ROFL.)
Alice - me? Whining? No way. Never.
But I am laughing that your horoscope was spot on as well. :) We Scorpios gotta stick together. Love the metaphors, by the way. I always know what you're trying to say whether you know or not. ;)
ROFL, Lisa. Anytime, dahlin'. ;)
OMG, Karen. I can so totally see my Gremlins doing that when they get older! My youngest is the most aggressive, and definitely a full-body wrestler when he gets going with his older brother (and he's only 2! I'm truly scared for the teenaged years.)
Glad I could entertain you with my hell.
Thanks, Paty. They say misery loves company, but frankly, I'm just glad to hear those of you have already been through this actually survived.
As for writing this weekend, I didn't even bother to take the laptop - knew I wouldn't even open it - so no writing whatsoever. Maybe tonight. Cross-fingers.
Aw, you're sweet to offer, Wavy. Be careful though. I may take you up on that one day soon. :)
God was very smart to give us children as babies - when all they do is sleep and look cute. Because I tell you, if he gave them to us as 2-yr olds or 4-yr olds, or even 8-yr olds, we would run screaming into the night and never look back.
I told Alice the other day I should let you borrow my 2-yr old so you can see what parenthood is truly like. She immediately said that was a cruel and evil thing to even consider. I suppose she has a point...
Barb - you have a 40-yr old child???? Wow. I never would have guessed that.
Well, Danita, I'm glad your revisions are going well. And I hope you get more time to work on them than I've been getting.
So tell tell tell about the new book. Inquiring minds want to know what you're going to be working on next. :)
