Sorry I'm late!

Lighthouse at Chania, Crete

Didn't see the notice that it was my turn to blog until this morning. Internet has been spotty at best so I'm posting late. This is a beautiful country with scenery that words don't do justice. The history seems to go back so far. All around Chania there are walls. It seems the Greeks kept building walls but the Ottomans kept invading.

Right now I'm sitting across from the Athens airport waiting for tomorrow morning and our flight home. It was a beautiful sunset but the view was from behind a dirty window. We traveled from Crete to Athens this morning. Some of you have been following my blog and reading about the places we have visited. My blog will no longer be a travel blog although I still have been places I haven't shared and will continue to share occasionally.

Thirteen hours until our flight leaves for home. First stop Frankfurt, second stop Vancouver, Canada then on to PDX. We have taken six flights since we started our journey a little over three weeks ago and we have three left.

See ya all soon!

Two Days And Counting

I'm counting down the days until we leave for Athens--Loci (not sure if spelled right) Albania then on to Crete. Looking forward to seeing the acropolis, delphi, Olympia and so much more. Crete and Santurini by ferry and sunshine. Wonderful southern California weather. Will post on my blog some of my adventures and photographs. Also excited about meeting my son-in-law's parents and grandparents.

Where have all of you been and where do you want to go?

Next on my list is Dublin. I've been to the England, Scotland and Paris so Ireland makes sense. My hubby wants to travel to Australia. So do I but the time on the plane seems formidable.

On my bucket list: swimming in the Mediterranean. Yup! Going to do just that.

Now I'm borrowing pictures from my daughters trip to Greece.

TAKING THE CREATESPACE PLUNGE…

NOW IN PRINT!
POSTED BY: Genie Gabriel
Web site: www.GenieGabriel.com

I'm following in Barb Cool Lee's footsteps and taking the plunge into the world of self-publishing. Actually, I'm only dipping my toes in to see how the water is.

I  have the print rights to my ebooks, so I am self-publishing the print version to one of my books as an experiment. On the surface, using CreateSpace looks like it will allow me to obtain these printed books at a price I can actually be competitive at in-person booksignings. These books arrived early this week and the quality is good!

The first test of this will be an event with forty authors at the Salem Library Authorama on Saturday, September 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event is free to the public and will be held at the main library, 585 Liberty Street SE in Salem. I'd love to see you if you can make it.

With print books, I'll also try a contest on Goodreads, where I am slowly finding my way around.

I'm also offering a print copy of this book as a prize in an online party I'm participating in this week at The Romance Studio. They are giving away many prizes, so if you're interested the event is being held at <http://trsparties.com>. Over 125 authors are participating with books ranging from sweet romances to triple-XXX rated. Stop by if you'd like to and sign up for prizes and read excerpts of lots of books. :)

Of course, offering my book in print is part of my marketing and promotion plan to let as many potential readers as possible know about what I write. I love the convenience of ebooks, but discovered I'm still excited about holding a physical book I wrote in my hands. Yes, part of it is ego. However, it's also a way to meet the desire of readers who may also like the experience of reading a physical book.

I'm excited and looking forward to seeing how having affordable print books affects sales of all my books.

ACE SPELLS ATTITUDE

Yikes! Once again the days have gotten away from me, so this post will be short and quirky.

Since I'm working on a nonfiction book about my life with dogs, many memories are surfacing about the beloved furbabies who have shared my life.

This is an anecdote that perfectly illustrates the personality of my first shelter dog, a Border Collie named Ace. His golden eyes mesmerized me, and I knew instantly he was smarter than most people--and he certainly had ATTITUDE.

We walked every day through our neighborhood and knew most of the other dogs. However, at one corner, a little dog came charging to the fence, barking. He followed us around the corner, yapping incessantly.

Ace glanced at me, doing a mental eye roll at the annoyance. However, he didn't react until we reached the end of the corner yard. As the little dog bounced at the fence, still yapping, Ace paused and lifted his leg.

His aim was perfect. The little dog backed away and shook his now wet face--quiet for the first time since he had spotted us.

And Ace sauntered away, a grin on his face.

He lived to be seventeen years old--fairly normal for my furbabies. As with several other dogs who have owned me, his spirit lives on in my heart and in my books.

Ace was the inspiration for a dog named Jasper in my first novel, THE ROCK STAR, who turns on the coffee maker for his person every morning. Not one of my Ace's duties, but both the real dog and the storybook dog had the same ATTITUDE.

Have any of you used one of your pets for inspiration in a story?

Is There Ever Enough Time?

Time vs. Writing
Writing vs. Energy
Energy vs. Projects
Projects vs. Time

Is it back to school yet? Waiting for all of the time and energy needed to finish all of the projects I’ve taken under my wing this summer. Oh, and I did forget exercise. As a sedentary person twenty-three hours out of twenty-four, I have to workout. Unlike a lot of people, if I had the time I would spend more than one hour a day doing what I love, jazzercise, running, walking and biking. I’d be pencil thin. Sigh...

But I don’t have a lot of time and some days I don’t have the energy to sit in front of the computer.

I remember when summers were the season, most of my work was completed. My life has turned around, but I love the turn around.

Back to school is coming! I will be lonely though. I love summers but on the other hand when my granddaughter visit only two days a week, I will find much more time to complete everything on my bucket list.

What is your favorite season?
When do get most of your projects completed?
Has your life changed as far as seasons/work?

Looking forward to the release of the first official book in the Mckenna Clan series. Sweet Sexy Sadie.

BEYOND THE PRINTED PAGE!

A couple days ago my granddaughter mentioned she wanted to own a bookstore when she becomes an adult. I asked her what kind of books she wanted to have in her store, and she said print books.

I find it ironic I'm a pioneer in the e-book industry at my age, and two generations younger still think of books as printed.

And I'm also wondering what's next for books. Since the iPad has come on the market, I've been eagerly wanting to learn how to put together digital books with interactive photos and links to cool info as well as audio and video. This fits so well with my love of graphic design.

I'm now researching the "how to" and came across this short video demonstration of an interactive book. <http://www.ted.com/talks/mike_matas.html> This demonstration wowed me and overwhelmed me at the same time.

The cover is a spinning globe. You swipe your finger across the screen to browse through chapters. You pinch with two fingers to open pictures to access interactive maps, or informative video with sound. You can blow on wind turbine and it starts to spin.

This company who demonstrated this video is developing software for publishers to publish books like this. They have a team on the West Coast working with a team on the East Coast.

I have only me--at least right now. So while I'm waiting for the software to be available at an affordable price, I'm exploring the feasibility of something a little less grand, though more complex than comic books.

And maybe my granddaughter will agree to sell these books in her bookstore--while she's also making a fortune selling rare print books. :)

By the way, the graphic above is from the web site of the NW Book Festival in Portland, which will be held July 27 this year. If you're in the Portland area that day (a week from Saturday), stop by the Pioneer Courthouse Square and check out the many authors who will be there. You can find more information at the NW Book Fest web site <http://www.nwbookfestival.com/>.
